February Newsletter

Hello Gator families!

It's hard to believe February is already here and we are halfway through this school year!

This month, our Second Step schoolwide theme is emotion management. In our morning announcements, we’ll be prompting students to notice their own feelings by paying attention to clues in their bodies, and we’ll be reminding them to use their Second Step skills to calm down
  • Stop—Use your signal
  • Name your feeling
  • Calm down: Breathe, count, use positive self-talk
These skills help students calm down strong emotions when faced with learning and social challenges, which helps them succeed academically and get along well with others.

Second Step lessons specifically teach about calming down strong emotions such as anger, disappointment, frustration, and anxiety. Please tell your child’s teacher if you have questions about how you can help your child learn to calm down at home.

Valentine's Day
A few things to note for classrooms that are having celebrations for Valentine's Day:
  • If your child wants to partake in the celebrations, they should send in their cards to the teacher by Friday, Feb 5th
  • If a student participates, they should make sure to include all the students in the classroom
  • Families can send individually pre-packaged store bought treats or students can attach a prepackaged store bought treat to the card if the teacher is holding a celebration
No School for Students
Just a reminder that there will be no school for students on the following days:
  • February 12th
  • February 26th
Students and staff will report to school on February 15th.

No Tech Challenge
February 1-15th will be the kick-off of our No Tech Challenge. Students will be bringing home a letter on February 1st explaining this challenge and their Bingo sheet. By completing the activities on the Bingo card at home with their families, students will have the opportunity to earn BINGO on their boards. Once a student completes a bingo, they will be bringing their sheet to school to get it marked off and they will earn a raffle ticket. *Note:  Due to the day off on February 12th, the original deadline on the letter will be extended to February 15th.

When students earn a raffle ticket, they will be entered into a drawing to win one of our many prize
s!

Clinic Update
You may see our very own Nurse Bryant at her new home working with a local area clinic soon!  While we are excited for her transition, she will be dearly missed by all the staff and students at Green Tree.  Our district nurses will continue to support our clinic as usual, so if you need to contact the clinic for any reason, the nurses can be reached at 335-1185.

Additionally, our clinic is always in need of extra clothing for some of the fashion emergencies that happen at elementary school.  If you have any extra stretch pants, leggings, or sweat pants up to a size 14 that are no longer of use to your family, please consider a donation to our students!

Attendance
Just a reminder to report any student absence by 9am to 335-5520.  Grade level entry doors are closed and locked by 8:45, so any student arriving after that time should enter through the main doors.

Student Drop-Off and Pick-Up
Please remember to use caution when driving on city streets in front and in back of Green Tree when picking up or dropping off your students.  Please yield for any pedestrian crossing and do not park in crosswalks.  If necessary, you may report any violations observed on city streets to the local police department. Thank you for helping keep the safety of our students a priority!

Title I

As you may remember from our virtual family night in September, teachers shared in their videos/slideshow information about Green Tree Elementary School as a Title I school.  As a reminder, the goal of Title I funds is to ensure a high-quality education for every child by providing extra help for those who need it most.  Our reading and math intervention services are just one example of services that are provided through Title I.  For more information, please review the slideshow here.

For our district to better serve you and your child(ren) through our Title I services, please take a moment to participate in the following survey if you have not yet.

I hope everyone has a safe and fun-filled February!  As always, thank you for your continued support and feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or feedback.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Potter
